What yours needs to cover
- ✓ Your trading name, contact details and any tax registration number that applies
- ✓ A unique invoice number, sequential, because your accounts and your memory both need it
- ✓ Invoice date and a due date as an actual date rather than "on receipt"
- ✓ A description of the work that matches what the client agreed to buy
- ✓ The amount, any tax, and the total, separated
- ✓ How to pay, including bank details or a payment link, and what happens if it is late
How to use it
- Invoice the deposit at booking and the balance on delivery, not weeks later.
- Send it to the person who approves payment, which in a business is rarely the person you met.
- Use one numbering series and never reuse a number.
- Follow up on the day after the due date, politely and automatically.

Yes. A deposit is the difference between a booking and an intention, and it is what makes a cancellation policy meaningful.
What are sensible payment terms?
Private clients pay before or on the day. Businesses usually work to their own terms, often 20 days or more, which is a cash-flow fact to plan around rather than argue with.
Do I need to charge tax?
It depends on where you are and how much you turn over. Find out before your first invoice rather than after, because correcting it later is a conversation with every client at once.
