This is a floor, not a market price. It is what the session costs in your own time at the rate you chose, before materials and before profit. What you actually charge depends on your market and what the session is worth to the client, which is what Unit 6 works through.
Learn the full pricing formulaHow consulting pricing actually works
A price that wins the booking and still pays you comes down to one thing most consultants never count: total hours. Not the hours the client sees, but the intake read beforehand, the travel, the notes, the report and the follow-up email. Work out that number first, and the market comparison becomes a sanity check rather than the whole method.
- Size sets the baseline, more rooms and bathrooms mean more time.
- The service changes the shape of the work: a wardrobe audit is a long day, a color session is short with a long write-up.
- Frequency earns recurring clients a small discount in exchange for reliable, repeat income.
- Your market shifts everything up or down based on what people nearby will pay.
The Professional course turns this into a simple formula you can apply to any job, plus a ready-to-use price list template so your rates look professional from day one.
Rate calculator FAQs
How much should I charge for a consultation?
Start from what it costs you rather than from what somebody else charges. A two-hour color session with intake beforehand and a report afterwards is closer to five hours of your time, so a rate that only counts the two is a loss dressed as a booking. This calculator gives you that floor; Unit 6 covers what to charge above it and why.
Should I charge hourly or a flat rate?
Flat-rate pricing is usually better for you and clearer for clients, because you get paid for the result, not the time. Hourly can work when you start out or for unpredictable jobs. The Professional course covers when to use each.
Should I charge by the hour or by the session?
By the session, nearly always. Hourly pricing punishes you for getting better at the work and invites the client to watch the clock instead of the outcome, and it makes the preparation invisible, which is where the time actually goes.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, completely, with no sign-up. For the whole pricing system, including how to present prices, build packages and raise rates without losing clients, see the courses.
